It is one of the most beautiful walks that you can do in Santorini (a “must do in Santorini”).
A 10 km road very well marked which will take you through the amazing villages, across the mountain, at the edge of the caldera. You’ll go up and down and you’ll discover the true Santorini.
The trail is paved in places, but you will find some portions that are quite rough.
The whole trail should take about 3-4 hours.
Anyway, it’s a spectacular one!
We visited Santorini in January and we were looking forward to going on this path between Fira and Oia.
This way we could have the possibility to really discover the island.
This island has to be felt. So in order to fell it you have to walk as much as possible.
From Fira you can see Oia in the other part of the island, like a white cloud over a red mountain. It didn’t seem that far. But we knew what to expect so we took comfortable shoes, some fruit for the road and of course the camera.
You don’t need map. No way! Just stay close to the edge.
From the Cable car in Fira you’ll arrive in Firostefani in about 20 minutes, from there the trail will take you fast to Imerovigli.
This part of the trail is the easiest part because will be amazed by the view and you won’t feel the time passes.
White houses with blue windows, perched on each other. Lovely terraces that opens to caldera offering breathtaking views. Alleys that carry you through the little miracles. And we go down, up, as if hypnotized of this beauty.
Once there, you’ll do the same. You have no escape!
The next stop was at a small church called Aghios Ioannis Katiforis. From there, if you want, you can go down to Skaros peninsula, where you will find the ruins of the medieval capital.
We followed the alley beside the church and passed through a line of newly constructed hotels. The trail from the edge of the village Imerovigli, will seem magical, it will awaken all your senses.
The trail reaches the church of the Prophet Elijah, where we stopped a little.
From here there is a road sign showing the way to Oia and you should go down until you reach the main road, on which you’ll go about 300 meters, after which the trail will climb again.
From here on, the road will take all your power. You will climb the famous Mavro Vouno (Black Mountain). You have to have a little physical condition.
At the top of this mountain is a little church named Panagia. Here you can enjoy a wonderful view over Oia. And the good news is that finally the road goes down.
After desalination plant you’ll follow a paved road wich will take you to the village.
Crossing the mountain is the hardest part of the route. The path is not smooth and not too comfortable at all, but once in Oia you get to treat yourself with a beautiful sunset.
I haven’t seen many hikers along the way and in addition, as I said before, its an absolutely stunning view. The road is dotted with beautiful chapels, hotels and houses astounding. Every few meters its a new opportunity to take a picture.
It is unbelievable how beautiful the island is. Postcards and pictures do not show even remotely the beauty of the place.

- Do not go when the sun is too strong or is too hot
- Not exactly a walk in the park
- Do not forget your camera, you will certainly need it
