It was a chill morning, when I stepped on the wet, cold sand.
The sky was cloudy between the clouds you could see the sun rising. The effect was spectacular.
Rays of sunlight and an orange glow created a magical aura of celestial beauty around the horizon while the clouds above me blotted out the brightness of the sun.
The sea was calm, it was just perfect for a morning Stand up paddle boarding, aka SUP.
Basically, SUP uses a surf style board and a long paddle. In that regard, it is a cross between canoeing and surfing. It has its roots where all board sports have their beginnings, in Hawaii.
Even if you’ve never tried it, many of you have probably seen stand-up paddle boarding, or SUP, over the past few years—it’s one of the fastest growing outdoor activities.
Stand up paddling can be done in a variety of forms such as on flat water protected lakes to easy beach paddling, to open water paddling and all the way to surfing waves.
In this particular morning Baris, from Alanya Suft Team, was teaching me the secrets of SUP on the Mediterranean calm sea of the Turkish coast.
When I had the chance to give the Stand up paddle boarding a shot, I jumped at the chance.
First I was afraid. I was a little intimidated to head out on the water and on the board.
But Baris explained me everything what is to know about the boards, so wasn’t long until I was on my board paddling out to the sea.
Like surfing, stand up paddle boarding is a lifestyle that can really draw people in. Surfing has the adrenaline rush of dropping into a wave while stand up paddle had the feeling of being one with nature as you paddle around just before sunrise, the unique prospective that you get once you start floating on the water.
It was just wonderful: the sunrise, the morning calm sea, the smell of the salty fresh air and the magnificent Alanya Castle ruins which sits atop a high peninsular overlooking the Mediterranean Sea.
It was amazing and I had so much fun.
If you have ever tried surfing or snowboarding, you will find stand up paddle boarding very easy. I was not quite sure what to expect, but I didn’t expect it to be so easy. I felt very secure on the board while paddling and I felt as if I could do this all day.
Stand up paddle boarding is an excellent way to get in shape, relax and have fun at the same time, and the best thing is, all you need is a body of water nearby.
