Rihiveli Island – The Maldivian style

As I told you before, Maldives is divided into two categories: Resort Islands and Local Islands. Resort Islands are where all the beautiful over water villas are, while local islands are for local residents but recently, locals have started to venture into the hospitality industry, as more and more hotels/guesthouses are built to cater for tourism. This actually helps the local economy as they use to only rely on fishing as their primary source of income. We choose to stay in a local island, Maafushi, is fairly affordable and from here we booked many trips and excursions. We had a day trip to Fihalohohi Island resort and we were so please about it that we decided to book a second day trip to a resort. This time we choose to go to Rihiveli Island. The island is situated at the South of the South Male Atoll at 49 Kilometers away…

Fihalhohi Island – A Little Slice of Heaven

To choose a Maldives island for vacation is not simple at all. How to choose out of 1900 islands? So you have to make a plan according to what is more important for you: the budget or the Maldivian paradise. We choose the best of the both worlds. A budget accommodation in a local island (Maafushi) and daily trips to these “bounty” style resorts islands.First Island that we visited was Fihalhohi Island. We paid 100 USD/ per person (30 USD for the speed boat and 70 USD for one day resort pass with all inclusive) and spend one day at the resort island. Situated within the South Male Atoll, Fihalhohi Island Resort features crystal clear water, white sandy beaches and lush greenery. It is 28 kilometers away from Male airport. Fifty minutes by speedboat from Airport and fifteen from Maafushi and you can disembarked on Fihalhohi Island. Some even claimed…

Maafushi Island – The other side of paradis

Since the government changed the laws and opened up the local islands for tourism in 2008, the whole concept of Maldives  which was only for the rich has changed. Instead of paying 3000 USD a night on a luxury resort, you can now book for 50 USD a night for two people including breakfast. We choose a hotel with half board – Kaani Beach Hotel in Maafushi Island and we paid 100 USD a night for two people.Maafushi Island is one of the biggest islands in Maldives. It’s surely the most popular local island in Maldives. It is located in Kaafu Atoll just 27 km away from Male. The size is 1270 x 265 m. Getting to Maafushi The good thing about Maafushi is that it’s easy to get to from the airport. There’s a public ferry which takes 1.5 hours from Male at 3pm for like 2 USD or you…

20 Things to know before going to Maldives

Most of the people go to the Maldives to have a pleasant stay in a luxury resort and they don‘t have any idea about the country itself. They just fly to a resort island, relax there, get some tan, eat a lot of western food, and fly away back to their countries. Don’t get me wrong. There is nothing bad in doing that since I’m also the kind of person that loves to get spoiled from time to time. Most people don‘t see the real Maldivian life. You need to live among locals in order to understand their culture, their way of life. Before you visit the Maldives you should know some things: 1. It’s Made Up of Almost 1200 Small Islands The Maldives is made up of around 1,190 individual islands, peppered across the Indian Ocean. Some are so small that even won’t appear on the maps. 2. Not All of the Islands Are Inhabited…

From Fira to Oia, a magnificent hiking trail

It is one of the most beautiful walks that you can do in Santorini (a “must do in Santorini”). A 10 km road very well marked which will take you through the amazing villages, across the mountain, at the edge of the caldera. You’ll go up and down and you’ll discover the true Santorini. The trail is paved in places, but you will find some portions that are quite rough. The whole trail should take about 3-4 hours. Anyway, it’s a spectacular one! We visited Santorini in January and we were looking forward to going on this path between Fira and Oia. This way we could have the possibility to really discover the island. This island has to be felt. So in order to fell it you have to walk as much as possible. From Fira you can see Oia in the other part of the island, like a white…
